Let's work together on The Deal

The cost of delivering council services is rising and we want to ensure we are managing our resources in the best way, while maintaining vital services.

We'd also like to benefit from your lived experience to help identify what works well in your community and what could be better. How do you think positive change could be made and what could you do to be a part of that?

We want to work with communities. So let's work together to build The Deal.

The Deal will be a new relationship between the council and local communities with the aim of building something better together.

We know that there's fantastic work being done in communities all the time, where people have been coming together to make a positive difference.

We've been inspired by projects such as these, where residents have taken charge after identifying a need within their community. As a council we can signpost groups to available funding for projects, can offer support and advice, but this is about communities having the freedom to determine what's needed.

So, we'd like to produce a form of social contract with residents, working together to identify what commitments the council should make and what it should prioritise, and equally what residents and communities think they should have more responsibility for and could do to help their community.

Let's make a difference

With investment in key areas (see the budget infographic on this page, issued in March 2025) needed to keep services running effectively, we're also working to try and tackle major health inequality in the area.

People are living longer, but often in poor health. In some areas of Torfaen, residents are living in poor health from a younger age than people in neighbouring areas. This is part of the health inequality. We want people living longer in good health.

We also want to work to give children the best start in life, so that they will live healthier, longer lives and have opportunities.

So finding out what makes a difference on a local level means working with communities who are best-placed to tell us what changes need to be and could be made.
