SOUTH STREET SEBASTOPOL CROSSING UPGRADE. ProposalTo upgrade the zebra crossing to a Toucan crossing at South Street Sebastopol. Please complete the short survey below to let us know if you agree with this proposal (see the map below). The survey closes 5pm, 12th November 2024Why is this being done?To improve safety of users and to provide crossing facilities for cyclists. Currently not all pedestrians or cyclists check the road traffic conditions before moving out, sometimes very quickly, into the road giving little or no warning to drivers. A Toucan crossing will provide red and green signals for everyone and will improve behaviours and reduce risk.What is the difference between a zebra and a Toucan crossing?Zebra crossings are for pedestrians, have black &amp; white stripes and are fitted with flashing amber globes on black and white posts – known as Belisha beacons – on each side. They have no light signal to control traffic flow – the right of way is automatically given to pedestrians when stepping on to the road. Cyclists should dismount to cross on a zebra but most cyclists do not dismount at this location.Toucan crossings are signal controlled crossings. They have push button controlled “traffic lights”. Toucan crossings are like pelican crossings except that they also have an additional signal for bikes. The canal towpath is a shared user route. Are there any other changes proposed?The canal towpath approaching the road side pavement will be widened. This will provide a slight improvement to visibility which is partially blocked by buildings, fences and railings. The bus stop is not moving.The road will be resurfaced as required near the crossing.
