Consultation has concluded
Thank you to everyone who contributed to Torfaen council’s canal consultation that took place during the autumn of 2022. We received a magnificent response and your feedback has helped shape the development of the Council’s new Draft Canal Strategy and Action Plan.
We would now appreciate your opinion on the new Draft Canal Strategy and Action Plan, prior to it going forward for formal approval at the Torfaen County Borough Council Cabinet meeting in June.
The Draft Canal Strategy and Action Plan seeks to harness the positive opportunities presented by the canal and its immediate environment by providing a framework for action which supports better collaboration, partnership working and co-ordination of activities along the canal.
The canal in Torfaen is unique. Not only is it full of wildlife and history, but it is deeply valued by our communities who passionately care about it.
The Draft Canal Strategy and Action Plan relates to the 4.5mile section of the canal owned by Torfaen County Borough Council. This includes the canal from Bridge 47 (Soloman’s Bridge) in Sebastopol to the administrative boundary with Newport. Within this section there is 0.75 miles of navigable canal to Five Locks Road and a further 3.75 miles of remainder, un-navigable canal through Cwmbran.
The Canal Strategy and Action Plan will guide and shape activity for the next 10 years, with the Action Plan being updated at regular intervals during this time.
