Torfaen Tummler School

Closes 31 Jan 2022

Opened 3 Nov 2021

Torfaen has some brilliant people, often unsung heroes, who do great things for their community. They don’t just accept things the way they are. They take action to create a world they want to see. You may be one of these people, and certainly know someone who fits the description of standing up and taking action, but here isn’t enough of you. And not just in Torfaen. It’s a global phenomenon, best summed up by a book title by an eminent American sociologist Robert Putnam called ‘Bowling Alone’

Putnam observed how bowling alley attendances in the United States were going up. Participation in bowling leagues however, plummeted. People were increasing ‘bowling alone’ and its wasn’t just in bowling alleys, but in virtually every aspect of civic community life; fewer people are doing things together in their communities.

Why your views matter

In Torfaen, we’re doing something about it. A group of people have come together to address what Putnam identified as a ‘social capital’ problem. There are strengths, real power in people coming together. We can tackle the changing levels of social capital and transform how we do things in Torfaen.

Torfaen Voluntary Alliance, Torfaen Council and social enterprise Grow Social Capital are coming together to provide you with a remarkable free opportunity.

The ‘Tummler School’ is free. You will be part of an exclusive group. You just need to commit to being part of three 60 minute-long online workshops, with the offer of a further 1:1 coaching/mentoring session.
